Former U.S. Rep Stenholm to talk Farm Bill as Rice Expo keynote speaker

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The developing 2018 Farm Bill will be front and center as a co-author of past bills takes the stage Aug. 4 at the Arkansas Rice Expo in Stuttgart. 

Charles Stenholm

Charles Stenholm, a former U.S. House member from Texas, is no stranger to agriculture, said Nathan McKinney, the interim director for the Rice Research and Extension Center with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

He will be the keynote speaker for the general session beginning at 11 a.m.

A third-generation farmer and native Texan, Stenholm served in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 17th District of Texas. He was a member of the House Committee on Agriculture during his 26 years in the House.

Stenholm graduated from Tarleton State University, formerly known as Tarleton State Junior College when he attended. Stenholm now teaches agricultural and energy policy and political science at the university. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural education.

He also works as a senior policy adviser for Olsson Frank Weeda Terman Matz PC Law, is also a co-chair of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, sits on the Board of Directors for the Concord Coalition and the Business and Industry Political Action Committee and serves on the Farm Foundation Round Table and the 25x25 Steering Committee.

Also at the Rice Expo

The Rice Expo will also have a full schedule of seminars, workshops and demonstrations on rice production, backyard gardening and cooking.

There will be field tours, with buses departing from the Grand Prairie Center at 8:15 a.m., 4:45 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. The three stops will include a tour of the Foundation Seed Facility, a breeding program overview along with an update on agronomics and a discussion about weed control and soil fertility.
