LITTLE ROCK – Batesville will be hosting a three-night short course for wannabe beekeepers on Sept. 11, 18 and 25 at the University of Arkansas Community College Batesville.

Jon Zawislak, an apiculture instructor for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service and Certified Master Beekeeper, will teach the course. Participants should plan to attend all three sessions.

The sessions will be held in room 902 in the Nursing & Allied Health building on the UACCB campus.

The classes run from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. each Monday and each session will cover a different aspect of beekeeping. Topics to be covered include beehives and equipment, honey bee biology and behaviors, how and where to get bees, managing bee colonies, harvesting honey and beeswax, beehive pests and disease management, and honey bee laws and regulations.

The classes are free and open to the public. Registration is required to ensure sufficient materials for students. Participants should register in advance by contacting the Independence County Extension Office at 870-793-8840.
