[Dr. Pengyin Chen] This is David Moseley, our research specialist. David is going to tell you a little bit more about our program and all the technical aspect of the program.
[David Moseley] During the harvest season, there’s a lot going on, so next we are going to take a tour to see the different things that we’re doing. [Video shows a soybean field and a combine.]
Here, Jiao, a graduate student in the University of Arkansas Soybean Breeding Program, is hand picking pods in her high oil and high protein project. [Video shows Jiao Wang, graduate student University of Arkansas picking soybean pods and placing them in a sack.]
The reason she is hand picking pods is because mostly she doesn’t have doesn’t have to use a combine. All she has to do is take two pods from each plant and that will be a complete representation of her progeny row. She is going to send the samples off to be analyzed in order to see what the protein content and the oil content is in order to continue her project for next year.
The reason she is doing this research is in order to develop new lines that have high protein and high oil content, obviously protein is for feed and the high oil is for the bio-diesel industry.
