Poultry Production in Arkansas

Poultry (including broilers, turkeys and chicken eggs) is Arkansas' leading agricultural industry.  It contributed over 40,000 jobs and almost 43% of agriculture's total cash receipts in 2013.  Many poultry and egg companies are part of the Arkansas poultry industry.

Broilers are the largest segment of the poultry industry in Arkansas with broilers being produced in 53 of the state's 75 counties.  Washington County leads in broiler production followed by Benton County.  In 2013 the state was number three in the nation in broiler production with almost one billion broilers produced (5.98 billion pounds of meat) and a value exceeding 3.6 billion dollars.

Egg production for the state was over three billion eggs in 2013 and valued at almost 480 million dollars.  Arkansas was 10th in the nation in egg production in 2013.  Egg production is primarily located in the northwest and southwest areas of the state.

Turkey production in 2013 in Arkansas totaled almost 30 million turkeys with 560 million pounds produced and valued at over 372 million dollars.  Arkansas was third in the nation in turkey production in 2013.  Turkey production is concentrated in the northwest and north central areas of the state.

The last few years have seen an increase in the hobby of keeping small poultry flocks. County Extension Agents and Extension Poultry Specialists in Arkansas receive numerous calls regarding the keeping and care of small poultry flocks. Poultry youth activities continue to increase as more and more youth become interested in keeping and exhibiting poultry.
