Agriculture is the largest industry in Arkansas.  Faulkner County has seen great change in agriculture over the years. However, agriculture still has a very strong presence in the county.  In Faulkner County you will find a diverse agricultural background including row crops, pasture, forages, beef cattle, dairy cattle and commercial horticulture. 

 

Agriculture is part of everyone's everyday life from the time you get up in the morning until you go to bed in the evening. Faulkner County produces many different crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans, edamame and rice.

This area of Horticulture is an ever growing market in Faulkner County.  We have producers in varying sizes from small backyard gardens to farms with over 500 acres.  There are over 50 commercial producers in the county. The agents work with gardens, orchards, commercial greenhouses, lawn care professionals and Farmers' Market vendors.

Homeowners looking for information on almost any topic related to landscape, gardening, soil, lawn care, weed and insect ID have come to the right place!

Faulkner County Extension received the Extension Excellence Award-County Team in 2013 for creation of the "Teaching Garden,” an educational program to meet the needs of the local community.  The Teaching Garden uses an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on growing fresh vegetables using raised beds and methods that are practical for homeowners.  It is located at Freyaldenhoven Nursery in Conway.

Turfgrass Research | University of Arkansas

The Faulkner County office has a large call volume when it comes to turfgrass production.  This includes homeowners and lawn care professionals.  The agents assist with plant disease samples and management practices.

The Turfgrass Research program at the University of Arkansas evaluates several varieties of zoysiagrass, bermudagrass, and tall fescue turf as part of the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program.

The City of Conway, Arkansas was granted Tree City USA status in March, 2007.  The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service, the Urban and Community Forestry and the National Association of State Foresters.

The Conway Tree Board hosts an Annual Arbor Day celebration that draws over 750 people in attendance.  The Board works to plant, preserve and properly maintain the tree canopy of Conway and Faulkner County.

 4-H in Faulkner County

I am Arkansas 4-HThe 4-H Youth program uses a learn-by-doing approach to enable youth to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to become competent, caring and contributing citizens of the world.  This mission is accomplished by using the knowledge and resources of the land-grant university system, along with the involvement of caring adults.

The goals of the 4-H program are to:

4-H | Faulkner County Extension | ArkansasEncourage responsibility, community awareness and character development in youth

4-H | Faulkner County Extension | ArkansasStrengthen skills for adults working with youth through publications and training

4-H | Faulkner County Extension | ArkansasImprove community partnerships and collaborations

Youth in 4-H learn about citizenship, leadership, cooking, arts and crafts, mechanics and technology, horticulture, agriculture, and other subjects. Each member selects at least one 4-H project and this project serves as the program's cornerstone.  A 4-H project is a practical, but challenging, planned course of activity on a specific subject.  Projects involve setting goals and evaluating progress through maintaining their individual 4-H Project Record Book.

Each year, the Faulkner County 4-H Foundation directly awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to outstanding Faulkner County 4-H members.  Additionally, youth are eligible to earn more than $80,000 in college scholarships at the state level for their 4-H work.

Faulkner County has 223 Master Gardeners in its program.  Members care for 38 projects/committees around the county, as well as supporting the Faulkner County Extension staff.

The volunteer service and continuing education of the Master Gardener Program enables the Cooperative Extension Service to provide practical and scientific gardening information to the citizens of Faulkner County.
