Water Plants for Ponds

For basic fish management, water plants are considered undesirable in ponds because many species are invasive and can take over a pond, leaving little space for fishing or even fish.  However, there is a growing interest in adding plants to ponds for esthetics, habitat, and complexity.  Plants are essential members of the pond community, and play important roles in providing food and shelter, nutrient storage and cycling, bank stabilization, and can be quite attractive.  In this section, we discuss aquatic plant species that can be beneficial as pond plants.  However, keep in mind that all plants have the potential to spread, and diligent management may be needed to maintain proper balance in plant coverage.  The list below includes species that, because of their attractiveness, reproductive capacity, and habitat preferences can be used for pond beautification.
