White County Master Gardener Projects
Pioneer Village
Like settlers in the days of old, the White County Master Gardeners (WCMG)
have a vision for Pioneer Village.
In cooperation with the Historical Society, WCMG have adopted Pioneer Village
as a sanctioned project. Pioneer Village was relocated from the White County
Fairgrounds to the Searcy Sports Complex on Higginson Street.
Nothing, including dozens of privet stumps, six-inch diameter poison ivy
vines, or cold weather, dampens the spirits of an enthusiastic group of WCMG
each Tuesday morning. With the many volunteers, much progress has been made
toward clearing the grounds. In less than a month, flowers and shrubs have
already been planted. Flowerbeds, an herb garden, and a vegetable garden are
planned to provide the looks of a working village.
A rustic cedar bench is being constructed where visitors can sit and let
their imaginations drift to days of long ago. One can stand there now and almost
hear the laughter of children at play outside the one-room school.
Near the back of the village are piles of mulch and dirt that indicate the
many hours of back-breaking work ahead. With shovels and wheelbarrows, the dirt
will soon be spread into potholes and the mulch will be placed in the flowerbeds
as they are planted. Watch for continuing progress as Pioneer Village "comes to
life".
