4-H Youth Participate In Agriculture Projects

Seventy-eight youth participated in agriculture projects in Van Buren County in 2001. The youth participated on five judging teams and exhibited 61 animals at county, district and state fairs.

Judging teams trained in Van Buren County were: Dairy, Land, Grassland Evaluation and two Livestock teams. The dairy cattle team placed fourth in state competition and represented Arkansas 4-H at the North American International Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, KY. The land team placed third in state competition. The Grassland team placed first in state and second at the Mid-America Grassland Evaluation Contest in Cape Girardeau, MO. The livestock teams placed 2nd (Jr.) and 6th (Sr.) in state competition. The junior team placed first at the North Central Arkansas District Fair.

4-H youth exhibited 14 swine, 6 beef cattle, 18 dairy cattle, 4 horses, 6 goats and 19 poultry projects.

Impacts

  • Seventeen youth improved decision making skills through participation on judging teams.
     
  • Sixty-one youth gained knowledge and skills in proper livestock management techniques through their livestock and poultry projects.
     
  • Seventeen youth learned techniques to make decisions, defend decisions, express themselves, solve problems and to work together.
     
  • Sixty-one youth learned proper animal nutrition, health management, record keeping, grooming and showmanship skills.
