County Impact Statements - St. Francis County
Arkansans Take Charge of their Health

Obesity has been on the rise, as we know that 38.6% of children aged 19 and younger and 61.7% of adults in St. Francis County are overweight. Due to the percent of residents that are obese, awareness has been made for nutritional education to be delivered as often as possible to county residents concerning the need for them to “take charge of their health.” The FF-News program in SFC provides to residents research-based nutritional information through educational programs.

The Take Charge of Your Health for Older Adults curriculum includes twelve lessons on the following topics: Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure, Take 5 A Day, Staying Physically Active, Budget Fat and Finances, Fresh Water and Good Health, Calcium and Osteoporosis, Nutrition and Cancer Prevention, Diabetes, Managing Arthritis, Food Safety, and Dental Health. This curriculum uses the Take Charge of Your Health campaign messages of Take Down Fat, Take 5 A Day and to Take Action. The main goal of this program was to teach the participants that in order to live a healthy, active, and productive life, they must take charge of their eating habits and lack of physical activity. It was delivered at the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging in Forrest City.

Due to this program, 10 SFC residents and two others have received necessary information, resources, education, and assistance in the hope of increasing their knowledge of and intent to adopt healthier eating practices, increasing physical activity, and practicing better lifestyle behaviors in order to “take charge of their health.”
