County Impact Statements - St. Francis County
Students Adopt Healthy Eating and Proper
Handwashing Practices
Addressing obesity and Body Mass Index (BMI) is a serious issue
that is causing much concern not only in our county, but in our
country as well. In St. Francis County, 38.6% of children aged 18
and younger are overweight. Educators are aware of the fact that
children's BMI is on the rise, which has led to local and state
leadership taking measures to decrease BMI among children. They
realized that if the problem was not addressed at an early age,
trends are that our society would continue to become obese and
overweight, leading to serious health problems.
MyPyramid for Kids and Fight Bac/Handwashing lessons were
conducted with 4th grade students at two local elementary schools,
Mildred Jackson Elementary School in Hughes and Stewart Elementary
School in Forrest City.
The goal of the program was to 1) teach the children about BMI and
MyPyramid and 2) teach the proper way to wash their hands.

Students learning about healthy eating and how to properly wash their hands.
