Families are important to the Searcy County branch of the University of
Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. There are a number of educational
opportunities dedicated to improving health, nutrition and diet, strengthening
and extending resources. If you have any questions or want more information on
any of the programs or services listed below contact the Searcy County Extension
Office at 870-448-3981 or
searcy@uaex.edu .
Our current focus program is “Healthy Weight for Arkansans.” Over half of
adult Arkansans are overweight or obese. One of ten children ages 0-5 years is
obese, and 15 percent of teens are overweight. Extension programs develop
knowledge and skills needed to adopt healthy dietary and physical activity
practices.
Expanded
Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)
EFNEP is available to limited income families with children in Searcy
County. It is a proven, cost-effective nutrition education program.
EFNEP programs provide a series of lessons based on the Food Guide
Pyramid and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Families can learn ways to
stretch their food dollar, how to shop widely and store foods safely and how to
plan nutritious meals and snacks.
EFNEP is available to expectant moms and families with children who
are:
Eligible for WIC
Eligible for food stamps
Receiving USDA commodity foods
Have children who are participating in subsidized school feeding programs
Walk Across Arkansas
Walk
Across Arkansas was an eight-week walking program for teams of eight people. The
teams had a friendly competition to see who could log the most miles. Those
miles were recorded on an Arkansas map posted in the Searcy County Extension
Office.
Searcy County had a total of 20 teams with 160 people participating. One team
captain reported that their 24 participants (3 teams) enrolled in Walk Across
Arkansas lost weight and decreased blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Everyone is looking forward to the fall program beginning September 28, 2003.
