4-H an Investment into Scott County’s Youth - Changing Tomorrow’s
Youth Today
"My 4-H group is important to me because it has taught me many important
skills which I will use through out my life. It has taught me sportsmanship,
leadership, teamwork, knowledge, responsibility, horsemanship, compassion, and
believing in myself. In short I think that being in 4-H is a great place to be
and I would recommend it to everyone." -Teaira Yancey, District Record Book
Winner
4-H began in the 20th century in rural farming communities and has evolved
into a world renown organization. Since it’s humble beginnings 4-H has grown to
offer many diverse opportunities for youth from various walks of life. Today,
4-H offers youth many opportunities and encourages each person to strive to "be
the best he or she can be." After all our motto is, "to make the best better,"
we do this through hands on learning in club settings and in after school
programs.
County wide activities that provide 4-Hers with life skills include: Open
House, Broiler BBQ, Dairy Recipe Contest, Annual 4-H Month Promotion at the
Waldron Area Chamber of Commerce Meeting, Summer Swimming Fun Day, County and
District O’Rama, Big B Day, County/District/State Fairs and Shooting Sports
Activities.
A wise person once said, "Time invested in tomorrow’s future is time well
spent." Scott County 4-H leaders and volunteers spend quality time educating the
youth through a variety of methods ranging from the use of experiential teaching
methods to hands on projects which promote life-skill development. Volunteers
are essential to the success of our 4-H program. The average volunteer leader
spends over 200 hours per year volunteering their time to work with 4-Hers in
Scott County.
