How long can food safely, stay in the refrigerator? You may think it doesn’t matter. However, short and safe time limits will keep refrigerated food from spoiling or becoming dangerous to eat.

For example,

  • Eggs in the shell - 3 weeks
  • Hard cooked eggs - 1 week
  • Tuna or chicken salad - 3-5 days
  • Open package of hotdogs - 1 week
  • Gravy and meat broth - 1-2 days
  • Deli and Vacuum packaged products 1-2 days
  • Bacon- 7 days

If you or a family member develop nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or cramps, you could have a foodborne illness. It’s not always easy to tell since, depending on the illness, symptoms can appear anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 weeks after eating bad food. Most often, though, people get sick within 4 to 48 hours after eating.

In more serious cases, foodborne illness victims may have nervous system problems like paralysis, meningitis or even death.

If symptoms are severe or the victim is very young, old, pregnant or already ill, call a doctor or go to the hospital right away.

Place a date on food products when you open them to use. That way, you will know the length of time the food has been refrigerated.

Eliminate waste by using food within safe time limits. If a food product does lurk too long in the refrigerator - toss it! Why? Because the bacteria you can’t see, smell or taste can make you sick.
