NAME: Procambrus zonangulus - White river crayfish

DISTRIBUTION:

The mid-west and equivalent latitudes on the East Coast.

HABITS:

Found in riverine systems.

SPAWNING:

Water temperatures of 45 to 50 F send it to its burrows.

GROWTH:

Young crayfish grow very fast shedding their shells avery 10 days. Adults grow vary slow, shedding only 1-2 times per year.

USES:

This crayfish is not as large as the P. clarkii, and is used more for bait than for eating.

CULTURE:

The white crayfish is found as a secondary crop to fish farmers in the native range of the white crayfish. They are harvested when the minnows or other species are harvested.
