NAME: Scophthalamus maximus Turbot

DISTRIBUTION:

Found in all waters around Newfoundland and Labrador. Found all around the British Isles but the best specimens come from Southern England and South Ireland.

HABITS:

Sand banks, or sandy areas in deep water.

SPAWNING:

Broodstock are kept in ponds until spawning season and later transferred to tanks (indoor) were spawning occurs naturally.

GROWTH:

Most adults range between 4 to 6 ft and may weigh between 50 to 200lbs.

USES:

Turbot is a fish which is not found in great abundance at sea and is greatly appreciated on the menus of the most renowned restaurants.

CULTURE:

Hatching of fry is done under controlled conditions (temperature mainly). Each tank is stocked with 30 to 40,000 eggs. Hatching requires three weeks and larvae are fed brine shrimp. At 3 cm, the larvae are stocked out into ponds.
