DISTRIBUTION:
Flounder are found in the shallow waters along the east coast and south through the Gulf of Mexico. They are also found off the coast of Japan and there are similar flatfishes found off the European coast. HABITS: Flounder make runs from the deep water into the shallow bays and estuaries every fall for spawning SPAWNING: Spawning generally occurs at night. Flounder produce large numbers of bouyant eggs. There is no parenting of the fry. Surviving the larval stage is the most critical time. GROWTH: USES: Flounder are highly sought after as dinner fare. CULTURE: Flounder culture is limited by the ability to produce reliable amounts of seed stock. Larval rearing of flounder is still in the experimental stages of development. Research will have to be done on nutrition and acceptable culture practices. REFERENCES: 29,4: 393-403. |
