| Billy and Sondra Wood helping Girl Scouts distribute mulch, May, 2002 |
Kay Boyne, the Director of Camp High Point, had long dreamed of a butterfly garden that would serve as a learning experience for the girls who would be responsible for much of the maintenance and as a memorial for people who had made contributions of their time and work in the past.
The plan includes plants to provide nectar for both butterflies and hummingbirds and other plants to serve as host plants for butterfly larvae so that the butterflies would breed in the garden.
It also incorporates a bridge across a rocky stream. The bridge is used as a symbol in many of the Girl Scout ceremonies. The Girl Scouts collected the rocks from the creek area in the camp to make the stream in the Butterfly Garden.
In keeping with the original objective, the girls have assisted with everything from planting wild flowers to spreading mulch and gathering rocks for the stream. They will also help in weeding and watering the garden in the months and years to come. They will have an opportunity not only to learn a little about gardening but to learn a great deal about butterflies, what they do for our world, and what they need to survive.

| Scouts marching across bridge at Dedication Ceremony, Camp High Point Butterfly Garden, May 4, 2002 |
The garden was dedicated with a ceremony including Master Gardeners and about 150 Girl Scouts on Saturday, May 4, 2002.
We will add pictures in the months ahead to show how the garden develops as the plants mature.
