4-H Judging Teams Build Communication and Teamwork Skills for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Polk County 4-H has grown into a very competitive and successful program for teenagers who choose to be active in the program. In the past four years, more and more activities have been available to keep the interest of the teenagers. Some of the most successful programs are the various judging contests.

Polk County 4-H’ers have been involved in Forestry Judging, Livestock Judging, and Wildlife Habitat Judging. All of the contests require decision-making, teamwork, goal setting, oral communication, and knowledge of the subject.

Corie Peek, Katrina Walston, Tonya Titsworth, and Brittany James represented Arkansas and Polk County at the Kansas City Royal 4-H Livestock Judging Contest and the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville, Kentucky. The Polk County Team won the right to represent Arkansas during the 2000 State 4-H O-Rama in Fayetteville.

In June, two of the other county judging programs competed. Three teams of 4 members each participated in the State 4-H Forestry Judging Contest. The Senior team consisted of Terry Golden, Kurtis Walston, Chase Roberts, and Sean Curry. Two Junior teams competed on behalf of Polk Co. Team #1 consisted of Holly Davis, Jennifer Ryan, Kayla Walston, and Jimmy Titsworth. Team #2 was made up of Roy Land, Nathan Golden, Barbie Lewis, and Thomas Lewis. The Wildlife Habitat Judging Contest was also held in June. Polk County’s Senior Team consisted of Katrina Walston, Corie Peek, Trent Hamilton, and Chase Roberts. They won the state contest and represented Arkansas at the National Contest in the Grand Tetons in July. The Junior team consisted of Matt Hughes, Jimmy Titsworth, and Roy Land. In July 2001, Polk County won the State Livestock Judging contest at State O-Rama and once again represented Polk County and Arkansas at the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville.
