Lesson learned: It could be worse

PIGGOTT, Ark. - A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work and long hours only to be disappointed by poor weather and crop losses. What I would like to ask you to do is search yourself and ask: "Are things really that bad?"

It's a lesson taught me by my former secretary Jeannie Benson, who died after a long battle with cancer.

When you watch someone come to work after a long chemotherapy session and are glad to be there, it makes coming in to work seem a lot easier than you might think.

Life doesn't seem nearly as bad as you thought it was when you go through an experience like that, mainly because life is so precious

Try and reflect on the good things you have in life, especially if you are blessed with good health, good family, good friends and thousands of other blessings we tend to take for granted. We all have things that get to us and everyone has the right to have a little meltdown now and then.

I'll be the first to tell you that we all get the blues and get down and think we have it bad.

Jeannie left this world smiling, not complaining and with a positive attitude. My thanks still go to Jeannie for making me realize, things can be worse.

So during this holiday season, remember to tell someone that you care about that you love them, offer to help a neighbor or friend, go visit the elderly or do some good deed.

Above all, remember to be thankful for all that you have and all that's bad that you don't have.

The Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service offers its program to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status, and is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer."
