Buying a New PC

Buying a new computer can be confusing.

That’s why your Cooperative Extension Service recommends that you first determine how you’ll use a PC before you buy.

If you use a computer strictly for email and surfing the web, a simple budget computer will do, but if you want to play games, edit photographs or produce digital movies you’ll need a PC with a lot of memory, and a large hard drive.

Fall Gardens

November is clean-up month in Arkansas gardens.

And your Cooperative Extension Service recommends that if your plants struggled with insects and diseases this summer, that you rake up the spent debris now and dispose of it. Don’t add it to your compost pile or you may add more problems next season.

A light layer of leaves on your lawn or garden is not an issue, but heavy piles of leaves can cut down on air circulation, oxygen and sunlight. Rake those leaves into your compost pile to be used as organic rich soil in your garden next year.

Rice Harvest

Arkansas will keep its crown in 2007 as the nation’s leading rice grower by producing an estimated 9 and a half Billion pounds of rice. That’s about 48 percent of the nation’s total rice output. Favorable weather, new rice varieties and advanced farming practices all played a part in this year’s record success.

The rice harvest is a boost to the state’s economy too, as market prices are high this year for the world’s number one food grain.

Cosmetics

Most cosmetics are safe, but can be harmful if misused. Your Cooperative Extension Service recommends never sharing makeup and always use a new disposable applicator when sampling products at a cosmetic counter. Never add liquid to a product to bring back its original consistency. You could introduce harmful bacteria.

Keep makeup out of sunlight. Light and heat can degrade preservatives.
