Do something about high food and gas prices!
LEWISVILLE, Ark. - Are you tired of paying high prices for food and energy?
You’re not alone!
You can do something about it, says Joe Vestal, Lafayette County extension
agent with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.
Vestal recommends planting a garden. Even a small one can trim $1,500 to
$2,000 from an annual food bill for a family of four. Your county extension
office can tell you how much seed you’ll need and provide plant-spacing options
and other tips on managing the crop as it grow to ensure high yields.
The extension service can also get a free soil test to determine fertilizer
and/or lime needs.
"A garden allows you not only to save money," says Vestal, "but there is
nothing like fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes straight from the garden!"
Next, cut down on the amount of fuel you use in driving your car. Here’s how
to save fuel:
- Carpool
- Change air filters
- Combine several errands
- Have your car tuned
- Avoid jack rabbit starts
- Slow down!
- Unload extra cargo
- Vacation closer to home
"The laws of supply and demand haven’t been repealed yet," says Vestal, "so
if demand slacks off, eventually prices should decline."

extension agent or visit www.uaex.edu. The Cooperative
