Top speakers to talk at NW Arkansas Goat Conference on March 29

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Organic goat production and goat showmanship are among the items on the agenda of the Northwest Arkansas Goat Conference set for Saturday, March 29, at the Washington County Fairgrounds off exit 66 from I-540 at Fayetteville.

Goats are the fastest growing livestock enterprise in the United States. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, there were 3.2 million goats last month, up 3 percent from 2007.

"The conference will provide participants with the basic information they need, including commercial goat production, internal parasite control, health management, forage and pasture management, and where to market goats," said Dr. Jodie Pennington, extension dairy and goat specialist with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

Featured speakers include Drs. Tom Yazwinski and Jason Apple from the U of A’s Animal Science Department who will speak on internal parasites in goats and marketing of goats and goat meat. Carey Wall, a goat producer from Independence County, will address the advantages and disadvantages of commercial goat production. Linda Coffey from Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas (ATTRA) in Fayetteville will talk about organic goat production and be on the panel to discuss buying and selling goats.

Other Division of Agriculture speakers include County Extension Agent Johnny Gunsaulis, Pennington and Cindy Ham, youth livestock agent. Youths who are expert in raising goats will demonstrate proper goat showmanship.

Denise Murdoch from the Washington County extension office said, "This is an excellent opportunity to learn about goats from some of the top goat people in the country without having to travel far."

The meeting is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration is $10 if you register by March 24 or $15 at the door. Lunch is included in the registration fee. You may register before the event with your county extension office or send your registration to Denise Murdoch, Washington County Extension Office, 2536 North McConnell Avenue, Fayetteville, AR 72704.

The Cooperative Extension Service is part of the U of A Division of Agriculture.

This meeting is open to all interested persons without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information should notify the county extension office as soon as possible prior to the activity.
