LITTLE ROCK - A little creativity in taking a photo of her brother playing a flute resulted in top honors in the 2009 Ross Foundation 4-H Photography Contest for Katerina O., 10, of Cleburne County.
The photo was shot looking up at a flute being played by her brother, who is in the school band. Katerina will receive $200 for first place in the black and white living category and $100 for best of exhibit. The contest is sponsored by the Ross Foundation of Arkadelphia and the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.
"She was tickled to death when she found out she had won," says Larry Jernigan, Cleburne County extension 4-H program assistant. "She has only been taking pictures for six months. I believe we'll see her again. She took several pictures of her brother and that flute. For a 10-year-old she has a natural eye for a shot. She's like a sponge, and she soaks up every bit of information I give her about photography and remembers it, then applies it."
Jernigan says he used 25 judges for the county contest this year. Many of the judges were employees in offices near the extension service. He sent them into a room one at a time to pick the category winners, and afterward, he tallied the results.
"With a large number of people, you cut out personal biases," he says. "It gives you more diversity."
One judge, Lori McElroy, staff photographer for the Secretary of State's office, says the winning flute photo "stood above the rest. It was compelling."
She was impressed with all the winners. "I would say the eye these young people have for composition, detail and lighting impressed me the most."
Kelly Quinn, a freelance corporate photographer, was impressed with the range of ages of the photographers. "I love to see young people pick up a camera and take beautiful pictures," she says.
She says the winner used "a dramatic low angle and made good use of light."
Other first-place winners and their category were Cari Bryan of Logan County, color non-living; Rachel Eaton of Madison County, color living: and Jenni Hosken of Crittenden County, black and white non-living. They each received $200.
The top three photos in each of the four categories received cash awards. The contest is open to 4-H'ers from ages 9 to 19.
The winning photos will be displayed next month at the state 4-H O-Rama at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. . About 600 to 800 senior 4-H'ers from across Arkansas gather annually at the University of Arkansas campus to compete for scholarships, awards and honors.
