LITTLE ROCK – Beginners who want to learn the art and science of beekeeping will have the opportunity over the next few months with free short courses scheduled around the state. 

“The classes will cover everything you should know to get started,” said Jon Zawislak, an extension apiculture program associate for the University or Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

The sessions will be held in Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Jonesboro and Sheridan.

“Beekeeping is becoming very popular as a hobby, and to supplement other gardening activities,” he said.  “These three-part classes will give beginners a good grounding in the basics.  Each session will build on previous information, to give you the knowledge and confidence to keep your own honey bees.”

There is no charge to attend the course, but registration before the course is required.

Fayetteville – Beginning Beekeeping Short Course 2012
Monday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 13.
Classes will meet in the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Arena, Hwy 112 South (Exit 66), Fayetteville. For more information, or to register, contact the Northwest Arkansas beekeepers at 479-409-0228.

Fort Smith – Beginning Beekeeping Short Course 2012
Monday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Feb. 20, Feb. 27, March 5
Classes will meet at the Janet Huckabee River Valley Nature Center in Fort Smith

Jonesboro – Beginning Beekeeping Short Course 2012
Monday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
March 27, April 3, April 10
Classes will meet at the Forrest L. Wood Crowley's Ridge Nature Center, Jonesboro.

Sheridan - Beginning Beekeeping Short Course 2012
Monday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
April 16, April 23, April 30
Classes will meet at the Memorial Building, 202 West Pine Street, Sheridan
The short course is free, but registration is requested. For more information, or to register, contact the Grant County extension office at 870-942-2231.
