Wheat Production
Wheat has long been considered a "step-child" or "cash-flow" crop
in Arkansas, including Monroe County. However with prices having
doubled what they were just two or three years ago, producers are
looking to wheat to be a real money-maker. In 2007, 34,000 acres of
wheat were planted in Monroe County, more than double the acreage
planted the previous two years combined. However the 2006-2007 wheat
crop was one marked by disaster, as an unseasonable cold snap swept
through over Easter weekend and froze the crop, wiping out some
fields and affecting yield in almost every field planted. This has
caused a tightening of the seed supply available for the 2007-2008
crop, with almost every bag of seed available being planted this
year. However, total acreage appears to be higher than last year,
possibly approaching 40,000 acres in the county.
Below, you will find links to websites and publications from the
University of Arkansas, Cooperative Extension Service, that provide
recommendations and other helpful information for growing wheat in
Arkansas.
