Corn and Grain Sorghum Production
While producing corn is a hot trend in Arkansas, a significant
amount of acres have been grown in Monroe County for a long time. In
2005, Monroe County producers planted 14,000 acres of corn, 5th
highest in Arkansas. In 2006, 8,500 acres were planted, ranking 7th
among Arkansas counties. With higher corn prices than ever before,
the acreage planted in 2007 was 36,000 acres, topping the previous
high of 28,500 acres planted in 2002.
Grain sorghum has also seen an increase in prices this year, and
some farmers have planted the drought-tolerant crop with 4,500 acres
being planted in 2007. Looking back to 2003 and before, producers in
Monroe County have traditionally planted more grain sorghum than was
planted this year. With the increase in price farmers can receive
for the crop, sorghum acreage will likely increase next year.
