Mississippi County
4-H Youth Development
If you are between the ages of 5 and 19, we want to invite you to
join 4-H! Six community 4-H clubs and a Teen Leader club are active
in Mississippi County. Community clubs include the Blytheville Boys
& Girls Club, Blytheville Bookworms, Dell Cotton Time, Etowah,
Future Children Ministries, and the Osceola Seminoles. Currently,
none of the clubs have a set meeting time. Those interested in
joining 4-H should contact our office and we will get you in touch
with the volunteer leader for a club in your area, or help you get a
new club started.
Some of the local activities our 4-H members participate in
annually include Indoor O Rama (competition in fashion, vocals,
dance, consumer judging, ornamental horticulture, and illustrated
talks, just to name a few), Outdoor O Rama (competition in tree ID,
gun safety & marksmanship, and bicycle skills & safety, just to name
a few), and county 4-H Day Camp.
Some activities beyond the county level our 4-H members have been
active in include Regional and State O Ramas, State Camp, Teen
Leader Conference, 4-H Day at the MidSouth Fair, and the Wildlife
Habit contest. Other popular programs include Shooting Sports,
Livestock Judging, District Horse Show, the STEM program, and
Citizenship-Washington Focus. More information on these events,
along with application forms, is available at the Arkansas 4-H
Extension website at:
In addition to participation in activities, 4-H members choose
project areas to work in with their family. Examples include dog
care, computers, gardening, leadership, cooking, and health.
Projects books are available to order in most project areas.
Another important component of 4-H for members is work in
community service. Members help improve their communities through
both club and individual efforts. Examples of community service
projects include having a cleanup day at the local park, putting
together care packages for soldiers, and volunteering at the local
humane society.
4-H members also learn to keep records of all their efforts in
competitive activities, community service, and project work. They
can prepare and turn in 4-H Journals showing all the great things
they are learning and all the good work they are completing.
Journals (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels depending on
member’s age) may be turned in annually to compete for awards and
even scholarships for those in the advanced level.
The Youth Leadership Program is also a very successful youth
program in Mississippi County. It was designed by local leaders and
the Extension staff to help train high school juniors leaderships
skills. Students from all 6 public schools in the county participate
in the program. Workshops are conducted monthly rotating among the
schools as training sites. Workshop topics include leadership
styles, goal setting, communication, community service, and
etiquette. The program has been going for almost a decade producing
over 250 young leaders.
