Obesity and overweight are serious health concerns facing Arkansas as well as
most of America. Over half of adult Arkansans are overweight or obese, while our
children aren’t doing much better. In Miller County alone we rank 28 out of 75
in obesity, and 61 out of 75 in overweight children. This is with a ranking of 1
being the lowest number of children who are obese or overweight.
These are alarming numbers that we, as individuals, need to take notice of.
Healthy Weights for Arkansas is a major focus area that the Miller County
Extension Service is working to address. Through this, it is our goal to:
- Motivate youth and adults to eat more fruits and vegetables
and less fat.
- Teach Arkansas to eat sensible portions.
- Help Arkansans understand the health benefits of physical
activity.
- Encourage youth and adults to increase time spent in
physical activity.
- Help Arkansans achieve and maintain a healthier weight.
