FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Michael T. Kidd, Director of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science and Head of the Department of Poultry Science, has announced that Karen Christensen, Ph.D., has joined the Center as an Extension Poultry Specialist. She assumed her new position in January.

The center is a multidisciplinary unit of the statewide University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. As an extension poultry specialist, Christensen will provide a prospective from the industry side of poultry science that will be helpful to researchers, industry and students.

Kidd said, “She brings a tremendous knowledge and experience in poultry production systems to our center.  Her skill set will bridge fundamental and practical aspects of science benefiting Arkansas producers, as well as our staff and students.”

Christensen obtained a bachelor of science in animal science from Washington State University with an emphasis on Nutrition and Production. After graduating, she worked with a primary genetics company for the table egg industry. Five years later, Christensen had the opportunity to work for an integrated broiler company in Northwest Washington State where she served as Service Technician and Broiler Manager.  While working for the broiler company, she completed her Master of Science in Animal Science from Washington State University.

In 1997, Christensen moved to Arkansas to join a large broiler company. While there, she was in charge of the feed and ingredient laboratory, serology laboratory, large research facilities, biosecurity and animal welfare for the company.

In 2010, Christensen completed her Ph.D. in Poultry Physiology from Mississippi State University.

Christensen currently serves on the Board of Directors for PAACO, the Professional Animal Auditing Certification Organization.  PAACO trains animal welfare auditors and others interested in welfare and auditing.  She serves as the Broiler Welfare Auditing Trainer for the Poultry Audit Training course.
