Spring Nitrogen Applications in Wheat (1:19 minutes)

Audio/Video Script:

Susan Scott
County Extension Agent - Agriculture

Spring is just around the corner and we need to begin topdressing wheat with nitrogen.

This is Susan Scott County Extension Agent with the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture.

Apply spring nitrogen in two applications with the first application in early to Mid-February and the second application 3 to 4 weeks later.

The addition of 50 to 100 lbs of ammonium sulfate with the first nitrogen application should be sufficient to correct any sulfur problems. Soil test levels below 20 lbs/acre sulfate-sulfur and a previous history of sulfur deficiency will likely require supplemental sulfur.

Most fields with loamy soils and a good yield potential following all crops except rice should receive 110-120 lbs nitrogen per acre. More spring nitrogen is generally going to be needed following rice for optimum yields.

A typical fertilization program may be as follows where 120 lbs of spring nitrogen is being applied and the field has a previous history of sulfur deficiency:

February 5th - 20th: Apply 120 lbs/ac of Urea + 75 lbs/ac Ammonium sulfate

March 1st - 15th: Apply 110 lbs/ac of Urea
