Spring Ryegrass Control in Wheat (1:06 minutes)

Audio/Video Script:

Susan Scott
County Extension Agent - Agriculture

Ryegrass is the most competitive weed that currently infests Arkansas wheat fields. This is Susan Scott, County Extension Agent with the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture. The time to control ryegrass is now.

Italian ryegrass is the predominant species of ryegrass in Arkansas wheat fields and by far the most competitive weed in wheat. Controlling ryegrass in the fall will maximize yield by reducing weed competition.

Dr. Bob Scott, Extension Weed Specialist has the following recommendations:

Clean up ryegrass escapes or new infestations in the spring with:

  • Osprey at 4.75 oz/A plus 1% v/v MSO. Use caution when applications coincide with fertilizer activation.

  • If the ryegrass is not Hoelon resistant then Hoelon at 2.67 pt/A or Axial XL at 16.4 oz/A will also adequately control ryegrass in the spring.

If you suspect that you have Hoelon resistant ryegrass then your best alternative is Osprey herbicide.

Always follow label directions regarding adjuvants, fertilizers and tank-mix partners. For more information contact the Lonoke County Extension office or your local County Extension Agent.
