Fertilizing with Broiler Litter (1:01 minutes)
Audio/Video Script:
Susan Scott
County Extension Agent - Agriculture
Are you considering using broiler litter for a fertilizer? This is
Susan Scott County Extension Agent with the University of Arkansas, Division of
Agriculture with a few reminders.
Poultry litter is seen as an alternative to traditional
fertilizers. There are a few things to remember when applying poultry litter to
row crops.
Always fertilize according to a soil sample.
Have a nutrient analysis run on the poultry litter. Nutrient
amounts can vary greatly.
Count on only one quarter of the nitrogen analysis being
available to rice and approximately half available to corn. Do not use litter in
season.
Fertilize with litter to the phosphorus levels of your soil
test.
Apply litter as close to planting as possible to minimize
nitrogen loss and maximize yield potential in rice and corn.
Go ahead and apply litter to your soybean ground when you are
applying it to the rice and corn ground.
There is often no way to compensate for low fertility during
the growing season. A sound fertility program will produce healthy plants that
can maximize yield potential.
