Extension Seminar Teaches Healthy Weight Management
Fifty-five percent of Arkansas adults are overweight. Obesity can lead to
heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Extension Service in Logan County
taught a 15 week program to educate enrollees about the benefits of healthy
weight management.
The program offers no gimmicks or special items to buy. There are no diets!
Eating is based on the food guide pyramid which is an eating plan that can be
followed for life.
Program participants not only reshaped their bodies, but reshaped their
lifestyle. Changes were made in eating habits, both at home and when eating out,
as well as in shopping and cooking habits.
"Over the past 15 weeks, I have lost 24 pounds. My husband and I are now
eating healthy, low fat meals. I feel great! My cholesterol is 145 and
previously I had to take medication. I am wearing 2 sizes smaller clothing!"
- Logan County Reshape Yourself Graduate
"I have changed my cooking at home to low-fat methods. I did all my
traditional foods for Easter except I adapted the recipes to reduce the fat. My
family never even noticed." - Logan County Reshape Yourself Graduate

Pre- and post-health screenings by Health Dept. show
participants the effects of healthy weight management.

Impacts
- Sixty enrollees participated in the 15 week "Reshape Yourself" course on
healthy weight management.
- Graduates lost a total 558 pounds and walked 2017 miles.
- A second Reshape Yourself seminar began with health screening for blood
glucose and blood pressure. One participant was identified with a high
glucose level and is now being treated by her physician for diabetes.
- A support group formed from some of the original participants and
continues to meet weekly. One member said "In the past I could lose
weight, but I never could keep it off. Now I’ve made lifestyle changes that
support a healthy weight."
