Reshape Yourself Sheds Pounds

The 15-week Reshape Yourself program was conducted during the spring. The program teaches participants a healthy way to lose weight by making changes in preparing foods and in the food choices we make. Exercise is encouraged with an emphasis on walking.

Little River Memorial Hospital co-sponsored the workshop. Cholesterol screenings were offered participants at the beginning and at the end of the 15 weeks. Keri Cody, director of nursing, assisted with the sessions by checking blood pressure of participants each week. She also taught the session on medications and surgery for weight loss-pros & cons.

Snacks were prepared each week to offer low calorie alternatives for eating. All foods fit the guidelines for a healthy diet.

Participants did not want to stop at 15 weeks because the weekly weighing-in gave them motivation to keep trying. The seminar will be offered again in the spring.

One participant said, "The program saved my life. I was so frustrated trying to determine what foods to choose (to fit health restrictions), and I continued to gain weight. Now I know how to choose the right foods."

Impacts

  • Weight loss averaged 7 1/2 pound per person for those that completed the 15 week program.

  • Miles walked averaged 17 1/2 miles per person per week.

  • One pound equals 3500 calories. To lose one pound per week, cut back 500 calories each day.

  • Favorite recipes may be adapted to decrease fat and sugar for lower calorie dishes.
