County Impact Statements - Little River County
Production Efficiency and High Yields A Key to Success

Production efficiency and higher yields is always a major concern of producers. They know that in order to survive in today's agriculture business, they must obtain the highest yields possible through the most efficient production and management systems.

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service strives to provide farmers with the most current information to help them make decisions to improve their farming operations.

Through non-biased research, research verification programs, demonstrations, producer meetings and one-on-one consultation, the Cooperative Extension Service gets this information to the producer.

Impacts

  • In 2001, Producers visited the Soybean Research Verification field to see the results of furrow irrigation. The field yielded only 42 bu this year, but the county average is 20 bus/ac. Results will also be presented at a producer breakfast in 2002.

  • In FY 2001, a corn variety demo was conducted using 15 varieties. This allowed producers to look at varieties best adapted for this area.

  • In FY 2001, a poultry litter rate demo was conducted on corn to look at the potential of using poultry litter in row crop production.

  • In FY 2001, 32 producers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas attended a producer breakfast and received the latest information on soybean varieties and disease control.
