County Impact Statements - Little River County
Little River County 4-H Youth In Action
2002 was the 100th Birthday of 4-H. Little River County
4-H'ers have taken advantage of a variety of projects with Environmental
Stewardship and Foods & Nutrition being the most popular. Project books teach
4-H'ers life skills through hands on learning.
Some of the county activities include O'Rama's, summer camps,
breads workshops and the Water Carnival.
Little River County 4-H'ers are called on year around to
assist with Fire Ant prevention on county school grounds, playgrounds and
athletic fields. The school boards purchase the fire ant bait and 4-H'ers and
leaders treat the grounds when the conditions are right.
4-H Teen leaders also present a puppet show (see photo above)
and distribute coloring books and stickers to K-3 grade students to educate
youth about fire ants.
4-H'ers also work during the Water Carnival. Four counties
participate in the Water's Edge School program. All the participating schools
take a field trip to Millwood State Park in May. During the two days of the
carnival, 4H'ers assist with classes and class navigation.
