Extension Programs Help Arkansans Reduce the Risk of Chronic Diseases

The Family Nutrition Education Program (FNEP) helps teach limited resource Arkansas families proper nutrition based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Food Guide Pyramid; resource management of their food dollars; and food safety principles.

FNEP is an ongoing partnership between the Arkansas Department of Human Services and the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas. Nutrition education also focuses on reducing the risk of diet-related chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and several forms of cancer, by helping clientele adopt improved dietary practices.

As a Lincoln County FNEP participant, Mrs. Lee Smith received four months of home visits from the FNEP Program Assistant teaching lessons concerning menu planning, nutritional label reading, comparison shopping, and reducing fat, sodium, and sugar intake.

Following graduation from the program, Mrs. Smith stated, "I make out weekly menus now for our meals and I use a shopping list. I compare prices of foods - which is something I never did before the FNEP program and I am constantly looking at the nutritional labels to check the fat, salt, and sugar content of the foods I buy. Now, I buy more fruits and vegetables for my family. The best part of all is that I know my family is eating healthier and my food stamps last now to the end of the month!"
