County Impact Statements - Lincoln County
Extension Educational Programs Assisting Farmers in Efficient Agricultural Productivity

Agriculture is an ever changing industry. With herbicide tolerant crops and global positioning systems (GPS) among other technological advances becoming available, the need for unbiased, research-based information is extremely critical. In addition to the data that is generated at the various experiment stations, data that is generated in our own county, on our soil types is needed. As a result, numerous demonstrations and research plots are conducted each year in Lincoln County. During the winter off-season production meetings are planned and conducted where up to date information and demonstration results are discussed.

Educational efforts and demonstrations that were conducted in an effort to educate producers of new information and technology were: Corn Variety demonstration - to evaluate different varieties on their yield potential for our area, Cotton Defoliation demonstration - to evaluate new cotton defoliant, Soybean Micro-nutrient Fertility demonstration - to evaluate yield responses to various micro-nutrients, B.t. Cotton Variety demonstration - to evaluate new cotton varieties. Cow Herd Performance Testing - collect data on cattle to assist producers in culling and replacement selections, Arkansas Beef Feedout - allows for producers to send cattle to feed yard and receive back performance data on their cattle when slaughtered. Conducted seven educational meetings for producers in areas of row crop and commercial vegetable production.

Impacts

  • A total of 173 producers attended educational meetings.
  • 14 newsletters were each sent to 212 producers to keep them abreast of current crop and insect status.
  • Producer saved $2.50/acre by using new cotton defoliant. New defoliant was approximately 20% faster in defoliating plants.
