County Impact Statements - Lawrence County
4-H is "The Power of YOUth"

In 2003, the Lawrence County 4-H program organized the county's first Technology Team. This club is open to all county 4-H members and will benefit the entire county program by offering learning opportunities for other clubs and web sites for continually updated 4-H information.

Because six of the County Tech Team members and two adult leaders also serve on the State Tech Team, they have experience in participating and leading this new type of club.

Since the inception of 4-H early in the 20th century, youth participating in out-of-school 4-H clubs have self-selected the projects or subject areas they will pursue, through hands-on, learning by doing. Today, animal science, plant science, technology, leadership and citizenship are the top subject areas chosen by Lawrence County youth.

County-wide activites that provide opportunites for 4-H members to learn skills include various community service projects including the 4-H "You CAN Make a Difference" canned food drive, O-Rama competitions such as talks and demonstrations, livestock shows and the Ross Photo Contests. Lawrence County youth also participate in 4-H state camps, state competitive events and Teen Leader Conference among just a few.

Volunteers are essential to the successful delivery of 4-H programs to youth. The Lawrence County 4-H worked with 84 different adult volunteers in various school and club activities. Of these, 15 were trained through the 4-H program.
