Excel/Ropes Course Build Self-Confident

Participating in the Excel/Ropes Course at the Arkansas 4-H Center is a great way for teens to build self-confident and self worth.

The program has a two fold approach. The morning program consist of activities that teaches leadership, trust, team work, decision making, communication skills, working together as a group and critical thinking skills. The afternoon program consist of developing listening skills, trust, personal challenge, self-confident, critical thinking and being able to do all of this while working thirty-five to forty feet above the ground.

We take at least three groups of students and 4-H’ers from Malvern Junior High School each year to this program. Most of these students are comfortable with the morning activities but some have their minds made-up that they are not going to get off the grounds in the afternoon. It is always amazing is to see how many of these youth change their minds once they put on the safety equipment for climbing (we always encourage them to at least put on the gear even if they do not intend to use it on the course) once they see their classmate and other 4-H’ers having a good time on the course most of them will at least go up the ladder to the first obstacle. Many of these young people will complete enough obstacles to come down the zip line. There is such joy to see how much these young people grow in self-confidence and self worth in this short period of time. How well they learn to communicate with each other, make good decisions and develop leadership skills. A total of twenty youth can participate at one time on the course. The school usually provides transportation and the 4-H Foundation covers the cost of the program. These youth have a wonderful time and learn some life long skills.
