Interstate 4-H Exchange is an Ideal Way to Experience 4-H In Other States

Interstate 4-H Exchange

Interstate 4-H Exchange is an excellence way for 4-H’ers to experience what 4-H is like in other states. We began a 4-H Exchange Program in 1998 as a way to provide broader educational and leadership opportunities for our older 4-H members. We also saw this as a way to retain older teens in our 4-H Club Program.

The program consists of traveling to another state and spending a week living with a host family, there are usually some planned activities as well as just family time to better experience what life is like in the state you are visiting. The next year you are expected to host 4-H’ers from the state you visited. Adult Volunteers and Extension Agents travel as Chaperones with the group and assist in planning the various events. Our first trip was to Bensen County, North Dakota, our second trip was to Calumet County, Wisconsin and this summer we will be traveling to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The 4-H’ers have really benefited from this program and look forward to traveling to other states or serving as a host family. 4-H’ers between the ages of thirteen and eighteen years of age are allowed to participate. Those participating are required to sign a two year commitment. Year one we travel to another state, year two they are required to host the young person that hosted them. The 4-H’ers are also required to assist with fund raising events to raise the funds necessary to both travel to another state and to host 4-H’ers in Hot Spring County.
