Cooperative County Programs Provide Educational Opportunities for County Residents

The Hempstead County office of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service cooperated with other county Extension offices in Southwest Arkansas to plan and present several educational programs for area residents in 2001.

Tri-County meetings were conducted in cooperation with Nevada and Howard counties to present a Timber Production and a Livestock and Forage program. The Timber Production meetings occurred before and after the Christmas ice storm and provided timber producers an opportunity to discuss available options for damaged timber. The Livestock and Forage program attracted producers from several Arkansas counties and surrounding states.

Hempstead County participated with other counties to present a Stocker Cattle Conference for stocker producers. The program stressed topics of interest for producers who purchase feeder cattle and background animals on temporary or permanent forages.

The first Southwest District 4-H Livestock Judging Camp was held in Hope in 2001. All counties in Southwest Arkansas cooperated to plan and conduct the judging clinic for area youth with 4-H livestock projects. A second camp is planned for 2002.
