Innovative Programs Highlight 2001 Hempstead County 4-H Program
"The program was very educational for the children. Most children love pizza,
but have no idea what goes into making one, or where the food comes from. The
program was the best we have had in a long time. We hope to have it again".
Clinton Primary School teacher comment on the Pizza Farm activity.
The 4-H Roundup invited all county youth and their parents to an informal
meeting to discover the world of 4-H. County 4-H clubs prepared displays of
their club activities and told guests what 4-H meant to them. A state 4-H
officer and a 4-H specialist spoke to the assembly about state 4-H programs and
opportunities available to 4-H members.
The 4-H Pizza Farm® activity introduced third grade youth to agriculture
through a food most youth love - pizza. The various food products that make up a
pizza were broken down to their origin to educate youth on the importance of
agriculture and proper nutrition.
The Progressive Farmer Farm Safety Day activity is sponsored by the
Progressive Farmer magazine. The purpose of the activity is to promote safety
around farm machinery and power equipment for youth who live on farms. However,
the lessons apply to all youth, regardless of their residence. All types of
safety training were presented to county youth.
