Philanthropy – Invest in the Future

♦ What is at the heart of "philanthropy?"

One might begin with the etymology of the word, from Greek, which means the "love of humanity" (Philos-love and Anthropos-humanity or mankind). We mean by philanthropy, in our context, those relationships that bring "time, talent, and treasure" to the educational mission of the Cooperative Extension Service of the Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas.

♦ Next, one might ask, "What causes people to bring their "time, talent, and treasure" to our mission?

An initial answer to this question begins with a reflection on what we call the "affective domain" of life. This is simply to say that people give of themselves, of their time, of their talent and of their treasure when they are "affected" or "touched" in someway by the mission, purpose or goals which an organization offers. Sometimes the connection is as little as desiring a tax deduction through charitable contributions. At other times, persons are affected by a motivation that is deeper than monetary self-interest.

For example, in the Hurricane Katrina disaster, thousand of persons, organizations and companies opened their hearts and gave time, talent and treasure. Simply put, philanthropy involves connecting with people in relationships that are often beyond the purely rational and intellectual. People give from the heart

Philanthropy at Cooperative Extension Service is an investment in the future.

The Cooperative Extension Service (CES) offers an educational mission that appeals to and is accessible to every citizen in the state of Arkansas. CES provides programs and research-based information to the people of our state. The educational mission of CES ranges from agriculture, to family financial management, to youth education and leadership, to community development and public service, and to many other programs and activities.

These programs are at the heart of the informal outreach and mission of CES. The programs "affect" and "touch" the lives of Arkansas families, youth, farmers, and citizens in general. These same programs are what inspire persons to invest in the future of Arkansas by a philanthropic gift to the Cooperative Extension Service of the Division of Agriculture.

We, in the Office of Development, invite you to learn more about us, about our work and about how we "affect" and "touch" the minds of hearts of Arkansans. We also invite you to become one of our "philanthropists," that is, one who "loves humanity" through the educational and applied research programs offered by CES.

Are you a philanthropist? Are you interested in investing in the future of Arkansas? Call us at 501.671.2079 that we may assist you in becoming an Arkansas Philanthropist at CES.
