What do we do?
The objectives of our organization are
1. To expand the capabilities of the Arkansas
Cooperative Extension Service in Garland County by disseminating
horticultural information and expertise to individuals and groups in
the county.
2. To provide education for gardeners in a setting in which they may
pool their skills and resources to improve community and home
horticulture.
3. To provide an opportunity for volunteer services to help the
community through horticultural projects and continuing adult
education in the horticultural field.
Current Projects
At this time, we have thirteen ongoing volunteer community project
committees and a number of special activities that take place on a
periodic basis. Our ongoing projects are:

When and where do we meet?
We meet on the third Thursday of every month at 1:00 p.m. in the
Garland County Library, at 1427 Malvern Ave. in Hot Springs. We
discuss current volunteer projects, explore potential new
activities, and conduct an educational program on various aspects of
horticulture. The meetings are open to guests.
What are the requirements to join?
You do not have to be a gardening wizard to become a Master
Gardener. In January of every year, a forty-hour training program is
held for new Master Gardener Apprentices. The program runs one
eight-hour day per week for five weeks. An $85.00 fee for this
program covers the printed materials, daily lunches, your permanent
nametag, and your first year’s membership dues ($10.00). At the end
of this training period, you need to put in 40 hours of project time
and 20 hours of educational time in the following year to qualify as
a certified Master Gardener. From then on, there is an annual
requirement of 20 project hours and 20 learning hours. For more
information on the Master Gardener program, you can contact the
Garland County Cooperative Extension Service at 501-623-6841 or
e-mail County Extension Agent Melvin Daniel at
mldaniel@uaex.edu.
