[Title Slide - Couponing- Clipping and Organizing, Susan Holman, F C S Agent - Franklin County, U of A Division of Agriculture.]

[Susan Holman] Hi, I am Susan Holman from the Franklin County Extension Service. Welcome to the second in a series of podcasts concerning couponing. Today we are going to talk about clipping and organizing your coupons.

The first thing we are going to do is look at clipping, so I’ve got my ad inserts from this week, the coupon inserts from this week’s paper and my internet print coupons. We covered Clipping and Organizing in the first podcast. So now we are going to get ready to clip. Clipping can get kind of messy, I’ll tell you, but what I do is organize in a stack of all the coupons I want to clip. That is what I have done here. I will sort through my internet prints and put the ones I want to print in that stack. So now that I am ready to clip, I will clip all at one time and try to eliminate some of the mess. I have tried to clip where you just clip one at a time and keep folding through, and I’ll end up with a bigger mess and I have actually thrown coupons away. So hopefully organizing like this will keep you from having as big a mess and hopefully save you a little bit of time too. I will show you a little trick, if you have two coupons that are the same, or similar like these two are you can hold those papers together or paper clip them together- I just hold them real tight- and clip all at once. So that you can have two coupons in one clipping. The most important thing when you are clipping coupons, don’t cut off the expiration date or the fact that it is a manufactures’ coupons and that is usually state across the top and the bar code where they are actually going to scan it at the grocery store or at your store. Those are the two most important things, so when you are clipping, do your best not to injure those areas of the coupons.

So now lets show you a few that I’ve got clipped, and show you some organization methods. Once you have your coupons clipped as these are, you want to take a few minutes and organize them into stacks or areas how you are going to organize them. I organize my coupons by the areas of the grocery store or with like items. So take a few minutes and organize those.

Now we are going to look at some organization methods. The first one I am going to show you is probably the easiest and the least expensive, and that is just the envelope method. These are just blank white billing envelopes that you would have at your home or that you could purchase. They are labeled by different areas or like products in the grocery store. So you would take the coupons that you have, for that area and file them in that envelope. Keeping all of the like ones together. This one is pretty easy and you could carry it with you to the grocery store very easily or you could look through it at your house and plan out your grocery trip before you even go. So that is the envelope method.

The second one is an accordion style or expandable file folder they come in small and bigger sizes. They have labeled areas. Some of them come pre-labeled and some you label yourself. File areas that you just file your coupons. So this first one here is “Paper and Plastic Products”, and so I have some coupons here for paper products, toilet paper, and that will go right here in the front file. So all your like coupons are together. This one fits easily into my purse, it’s a great way to organize coupons, so that is the accordion file folder.

This is a CD box. Just a plastic storage box. You can buy these pretty easily. You can also use an index card file box if you are not going to have as many coupons. This uses index cards that I have just labeled just like the other ones with areas of the grocery store. They fit down in the box and you file coupons behind them. This box would allow for a lot of coupon storage. If you are not going to have this many coupons or if this is too bulky for you to carry with you to the grocery store, you might think about that index style box. That may be a little easier for you.

The last system I am going to show you is the binder. The binder has baseball card inserts which allow you to see the coupons very well. And it is organized by tabs, by the different areas of the grocery store. So this is “Baked Foods and Dry Goods” and you can see I can see all of my coupons in one area. It does take a little bit of folding sometimes to get the coupons in those, but you can see all of your coupons at once and you can file through them pretty easily. I do like this method also because it has the pockets in the front and back of the binder where you can keep your store ads, additional coupons, or useful information for when you are out shopping.

So I have showed you how to clip coupons and some organization methods today that will hopefully get you organized with your coupons. In the next podcast, we are going to actually take you to the store and show you how to use your coupons.
