About Franklin County

According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census 2000 Summary, Franklin County has a population of 17,771. There are 6,882 households, 2,465 of which have children under 18 years of age. There are 1,967 residents age 65 years and over, and the median age is 37.6 years. Franklin County is 96.2% Caucasian (17,091), .6% African American (110), .8% American Indian (142), .3% Asian (46), and 1.7% Hispanic (310).

In Franklin County, 11.2% (1,306) of residents attained an education that was less than the 9th grade; 17.7% (2,063) attended 9th – 12th grades, no diploma; 35.4% (4,121) are high school graduates; 4.5% (530) attained associate degrees; 7.6% (885) bachelor degrees. 3.4% (400) graduate or professional degrees.

Manufacturing represents the largest source of employment with 1,773 jobs. Educational, health, and social services were second with 1,469 jobs. Retail trade was 3rd with 855 jobs. The per capita personal income in Franklin County is $14,616.

Extension works closely with researchers at the University of Arkansas to ensure that county residents receive quality research-based information as it becomes available.

Impacts

Franklin County Extension Staff provide an advisory role to organizations such as:

  • Six Extension Homemakers Clubs with 88 members

  • Franklin County 4-H Foundation
     
  • Eight 4-H Clubs with 160 members
