Faulkner County Youth and Adults "Eat Well for Less"
After completing the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service
Family Nutrition Program, one participant commented "I have learned about paying
attention to the nutrition and labels on the food I buy. I have changed some of
my eating habits. I have really enjoyed being in this class."
Adults at three Senior Citizens Centers and one homeless shelter in Faulkner
County participated in the Family Nutrition Program sponsored by the University
of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.
Extension staff met with participants one-on-one and in small groups and used
research based educational materials to teach them how to make healthy food
choices and shop smarter for food. A recent study in Virginia indicated that for
every dollar spent to implement a nutrition education program similar to FNEP,
$10.64 will be saved on future health care costs.
Extension Staff also taught nutrition lessons to youth at the Conway Housing
Authority, two middle schools, and a children’s health fair. Students learned
the importance of calcium in their diet, how to prepare healthy snacks, and food
safety rules.
