[Dr. Pengyin Chen, Soybean Breeder, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture standing in a soybean field.] This is Pengyin Chen, soybean breeder with the Division of Agriculture, University of Arkansas, here at the Stuttgart Experiment Station, where we evaluate our potential lines for release as a variety for the farmers to grow.

[Video shows researchers observing and taking notes in a soybean field.] This time of year we come here, take notes and measure a lot of traits like maturity, lodging, shattering, and height, and of course the yield potential visual assessment. [Video shows a combine harvesting soybeans.] So then we’ll have the combine come in to cut the plots, so the combine will record the data, in terms of weight and moisture so that we can convert to bushels per acre.

[Video shows researchers observing and harvesting a soybean field.] And then eventually this data is going to be compiled so extension service then can publish their “Soybean Update” and other extension publications. So we hope this information will help farmers to select the varieties to grow on their farms. In total we probably have 12,000 different lines that are being evaluated here. [Video shows rows of soybeans in a field.] Also for breeding purposes we are looking at about 12,000 progeny rows from which we will select future varieties. So disease resistance and adaptation to our environment is the most important things that we look at.
