C.E.S.P. 8-13: Travel Insurance

Date Revised: 5-1-2015
Supersedes: 8-6-2015

Summary: Establishes policy concerning accident insurance for employees on official travel status.

If you are a benefits-eligible employee, you automatically have travel assistance coverage due to your enrollment in basic life insurance and basic long-term disability insurance.

The travel assistance plan provides emergency travel assistance when you are over 100 miles from home. Benefits include:

  • Guaranteed hospital admission
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Prescription replacement
  • Medical referrals to western-trained, English-speaking medical providers
  • Care and transport of unattended minor children

Be aware that when traveling abroad, foreign medical providers will usually require payment for medical services and will not accept assignment of medical bills, even with evidence of insurance. Therefore, if you require medical care abroad, pay with a credit card if possible and submit a claim for reimbursement as soon as you return.

This coverage excludes travel in any aircraft owned or leased and operated by a University employee or a member of his/her household.

Emergency Travel Assistance

If you are a benefits-eligible employee, you automatically have travel assistance coverage through UnitedHealthcare Global - a service partner associated with Standard, our long term disability and life insurance carrier. This travel assistance program is designed to help employees and their eligible dependents with pre-trip questions, assistance to be medically evacuated, locating a medical provider and interpreter, loss of passports/money and legal concerns. Any service must be arranged through the program.
